Day 11: Yawning

I'm writing this post from my couch on a teeny tiny netbook that is connected with a verizon broadband card. I'm testing it out for the telecom manager at work. It's so little it fits in my purse. What does this have to do with yoga you ask? Nothing. I'm just highly amused by the fact that it took me ten minutes to get to my site and get this post going. Not because the verizon access is slow. It's not that at all. Its trying to type on this little keyboard. I botched my url several times and took several tries to type the title of the post. It takes a bit of getting used to! I seem to be doing ok now, a paragraph in. This is probably the cutest little thing I've ever seen. I want one!
Today was 5:30 with Michelle up at Dray's studio. It has been probably a year since I've had the pleasure of taking her class. I was happy to see her, but was dragging again, similar to day 9. I was dragging so badly that I yawned during several different postures beginning with half moon. I got enough sleep last night, so all of the yawning caught me off guard. A big yawn came out while I was in half moon (not an easy posture to yawn in!), a few more during the standing series and a big one coming out of rabbit.
Have any of you ever had a practice like that, where you kept yawning?

  1. YES, it happens to me every now and then when I go to the 6:00am class after only 4-5 hours of sleep :) But normally all the yawning disappears by awkward pose. In my case is lack of sleep.

  2. I have classes like that. I think it has more to do with the humidity for me than being tired. When the humidity is high, I can't always get my breath coordinated and then I yawn. At least that's my theory...

  3. It happens to me in Pranayama breathing sometimes. Probably just my body waking up. One of my all time favorite quotes from a teacher - "There's no yawning in yoga!"

  4. Ah yes...my yawns seem to come during the savasana's in between spine strengthening. Maybe I'm not breathing right? For some reason I also have to sneeze during the 2 minute savasana. Weird. Hope it's a nice sunny day in Vegas today!

  5. cirita~ 6am! Brutal! I think I would fall back asleep in savasana that early. I wish I was more of a morning person.
Dorothy~ my breath did feel a bit "off". The humidity certainly can throw us out of whack when it gets high. One time it was 69% and I about passed out. :)
Greg~ well, if a teacher is saying there's no yawming in yoga, it must be more common than I thought!
Tracik~ I love that you have to sneeze during 2 min savasana. That cracks me up for some reason. Stay warm today east coast gal!

  6. Greg - did the teacher say that line in a Tom Hanks kind of way? I hope so. :)

But yeah, I've had a few of those myself. Not much rhyme or reason to it. Usually pranayama wakes me UP, but every now and then my body just very stubbornly wants to be asleep!

  8. I yawn ALL THE TIME in Bikram! I was beginning to think I was the only one since I never saw it discussed in the Bikram blogs/forums. For me, I think it's an indication of inadequate sleep and perhaps not enough oxygen to the brain (always happens during pranayama!). Love your blog!

  10. Ardialane~ Oh, its kind of hilarious to watch your mouth wide open yawning while in a posture. I wanted to just laugh when I was coming out of rabbit and saw my tonsils! And thank you! So glad you stopped by...

  11. Not here. I've fallen asleep during a 20 second savasana, but I can't remember yawning once after pranyama started. Go figure...

  12. Duffy~ it was a total first for me too...yawning after pranayama just doesn't usually happen!

  13. Been practicing about a year, I totally yawn in pranayama. I've observed several other regulars who do the same. Never thought much of it. Funny though.

  14. I yawn ALL THE TIME. That's why I googled it. I don't know why. Still not sure.

  15. I constantly yawn as well (heated vinyasa yoga) - early morning or evening class, doesn't matter the time of day or amount of rest I've had. I've been Googling to figure out why.
